Jaguars Promoting Trent Baalke To GM

In the event hiring Urban Meyer as coach wouldn't be enough, the Jacksonville Jaguars went out and got themselves a general manager.

At least, that's the word from NFL Media's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, who report that Trent Baalke will be hired as Jaguars GM. "The deal isn’t done and official, but it is slated to be soon," Rapoport wrote.

So, who is Baalke? Well, the Jaguars hired him as director of player personnel in February, and then promoted him to interim GM after David Caldwell was fired in November. Now, he will be the GM on a full-time basis, and you can bet luring Meyer to Jacksonville has a role in that.

Prior to joining the Jaguars last winter, Baalke served as an adviser to the NFL, working on player development and evaluation, reviewing officials and other game-related matters. He held that job for four years.

This won't be Baalke's first stint as a GM, though. He held the same role with the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-16. And hey, in 2011, he helped transform a 6-10 team to one that finished 13-3.

Maybe Baalke can help Meyer do something similar with the sad-sack Jaguars, who compiled the league's worst mark last year at 1-15. On the bright side, it should be pretty easy to improve on that.
