In a Stacked Memorial Tournament Field, Is Tiger a Bargain Bet?

The PGA Tour is back in Dublin, Ohio for a second straight week at Muirfield Village and if you have been watching since the COVID break has ended, this will be the most electric field to date.

Bryson DeChambeau, who won the Rocket Mortgage Classic two weeks ago, is back. Justin Thomas, who finished second after a playoff last week at the Workday Charity Open, is back. Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Tiger Woods, and Brooks Koepka are all in the field.

If you’ve been waiting for the big names to return, this is your week to watch.

This will also be our first look at Tiger since The Match in May with Phil Mickelson, Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning, and his first PGA Tour event since February. Woods needs to get in a few rounds before the PGA Championship in a few weeks, and what better place to do it than at Jack’s place where he’s won five times in his career.

Looking through the odds for the top 15, there are several bets that make sense.

Bryson DeChambeau has been a top-10 lock since returning to play and while the payout won’t be crazy at +125, it’s almost a guaranteed win. He’s finished T3, T8, T6, and won.

Justin Thomas lost in a playoff to Collin Morikawa at Muirfield last week. He’s had three top-10s in four events since the restart. It stands to reason that he will likely continue that good play for a second straight week.

Dustin Johnson took a couple of weeks off after winning the Travelers Championship, but he’s had six top-20s at the Memorial with a T8 finish last year. DJ is a potential top-10 candidate.

Tiger Woods is probably the safest top-10 bet on the board. Woods, although having not played in a PGA Tour event since February, has had plenty of success at Muirfield over the course of his career, including a T9 last year. At +270 for a top-10 and +125, he’s a great value.

Webb Simpson at +260 for a top-10 finish is hard to pass up. Simpson has been on fire as of late. He’s had two wins, three seconds and a third in the last 12 months. The biggest issue is that Simpson’s last outing at Muirfield in 2016 was a T67 finish.
