While many may be questioning the necessity of Steve Spurrier’s last-minute news conference this week in which he called out his “enemies” in the media and attempted to rally support for himself and Gamecock Nation, his tirade may have given the South Carolina program the boost it needed.
A reinvigorated Spurrier recently told elite 2017 quarterback prospect Jake Fromm he would coach at South Carolina for six more seasons if he committed to play his college football in Columbia, according to 247Sports.
Fromm is one of the most regarded quarterbacks in the class of 2017 and currently lists Alabama, Ole Miss and South Carolina as his favorites.
If Spurrier sticks to his word, he would be 76 years old heading into the end of those six seasons. Could he realistically coach at a high level at that age? His career record should allow him the opportunity to try if he so desires.
Don’t be surprised if the Ol’ Ball Coach stays that long just for spite. He’d surely get a kick out of beating up on his “enemies” and winning the SEC title at an age when most men his age are years into their retirement.
