Hollywood Writer's Guild Slammed Over Lack Of Israel Support

Hamas' horrifying terrorist attack in Israel several weeks ago has exposed much about the rot at the core of progressive industries, including the largest: Hollywood.

The education system has been the most obvious offender, with students and faculty at elite institutions openly siding with Hamas over Israel, excusing terrorism.

Major media outlets have also, yet again, shown their true colors. Despite the only source being a Hamas press release, they ran with misinformation that Israel had bombed a hospital in Gaza. That story, like so many others they've published over the years, turned out to be false. Instead, a rocket from a Palestinian group misfired, landing on the parking lot next to the hospital. Who would have guessed a terrorist organization would lie to try to influence public opinion?

For Hollywood though, it should have been an easy decision to issue statements standing with Israel or criticizing terrorism. Many of the industry's most powerful or influential figures are Jewish; Steven Spielberg, Bob Iger and Jeffrey Katzenberg, as just a few examples. For an industry that prides itself on issuing statements anytime a political issue they support or oppose enters the national conversation though, there's been a deafening silence.

Because progressive politics always comes first.

Hollywood Writers Guild Stays Quiet

Two and a half weeks after Hamas invaded Israel, killing 1,400 civilians, raping, torturing and executing them, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) sat on its hands. Instead of immediately condemning one of the worst terrorist attacks on Jews since the Holocaust, they waited.

How could this happen? Well because the WGA is so far left, there was disagreement over the legitimacy of mass murder of women, children and the elderly.

Deadline reported over the weekend that guild leadership told some individuals who were furious over their silence that there were "varied" viewpoints, with no "consensus."

Meredith Stiehm, President of the WGA, issued a letter to membership explaining their inexcusable inaction: “Like the membership itself, the Board’s viewpoints are varied, and we found consensus out of reach. For these reasons, we have decided not to comment publicly.”

After being rightly called out by top writers, including some who resigned their membership over it, they suddenly altered course. On Tuesday, a statement was released by the WGA criticizing Hamas' atrocities, while immediately jumping on Israel too.

“The murder of so many innocent people in Israel is an abomination," the letter reads. “We deeply mourn the deaths of innocent Palestinians ensnared in the violence in Gaza. We feel for all our members who have been affected, directly and indirectly. We hope that wisdom prevails in the region – and for the safety of all innocent people caught in the escalating violence."

Politics Comes First

It's remarkable that it took this long for a Hollywood union to speak up against one of the most obvious historic wrongs. Well, it would be remarkable if their devotion to progressive politics wasn't so predictable.

The entertainment industry is so fundamentally broken and warped by far left politics that studios, guilds and individuals have refused to speak up against evil. Because their ideology is obsessed with nonsensical woke views of "colonialism" and "oppression."

Being progressive comes before supporting a huge portion of the entertainment community, an embarrassing stain on an already declining industry.

Studios rush to condemn the police, Donald Trump, new bills in Florida; anything that goes against the left's ideological demands. But terrorism? That's when it's hard to find "consensus" or agreement on what's morally acceptable.

It's embarrassing for the WGA, embarrassing for Hollywood, and embarrassing for union members that this was even remotely debatable. But it shows that like so many institutions taken over by progressive politics, they're permanently broken.
