Holly Madison Stops By, Maniac Sets Fox News Christmas Tree On Fire & Police Dog Drops A Deuce On Wells Fargo Ice

Guys, if I say something about throwing up a couple of new Bluetooth bathroom fans — FAST — it isn’t in a literal sense

It didn’t take long for the emails to start pouring in Monday after I mentioned how I’m thinking of installing new bathroom fans that connect via Bluetooth and will crank out the tunes during bathroom time.

Bathroom fan vets were quick to remind me that there’s nothing FAST about putting in these fans. Trust me, fellas, when I say fast, I mean like eight hours…after football season when there’s a foot of snow on the ground and I’m going crazy from being stuck in the house.

• Scott M.’s advice:

I have installed one and installed and replaced many bathroom fans but replacing any bathroom fan is not a quick or easy project.

Most bathroom fans are mounted to the framing before drywall is installed. They are not readily removable. And most fans you buy are not designed to be placed into a finished ceiling even if the old one is out.

If you have access to the ceiling above it is a little easier but there are usually nailing flanges up into the ceiling joists so it would still require getting those out from below. So it is either cutting the metal brackets or removing and patching drywall.  And even with the few (very limited selection and often only one or none stocked) fans designed to be installed in a finished ceiling you have to be sure your duct work is properly attached to the new fan which can be tedious through the hole in the ceiling nevermind getting it off the old fan which wasn’t designed to be remove.

• Tyler provided too much information:

Love the column. I’ve had the exact fan on the left for about 6 months. I love it. The music is actually pretty clear and works really well. My only very minimal complaint is the

Bluetooth has a mind of its own in terms of which device it connects to.

I don’t use the music every day, probably 2-3 times a week when I am planning on doing some manscaping or taking a longer shower.

• And Brent agrees that winter is a great time of year for this project:

I installed one of these that is similar to the one in your picture on the left side of the pic. Very easy install. The hardest part was working in the attic. I had to detach the housing of the old fan from the ceiling joists and also attach the new housing. Winter is a good time to do this rather than the summer. It can get pretty hot in the summer. I installed it in the bathroom that my three sons use. They love it.

• Greg H. wrote to me last week looking for golf trip advice for guys who are looking for a little nightlife and maybe some gambling options without breaking the bank. As always, Screencaps readers fired off suggestions.

• Travis H. says Branson needs to be under consideration. That’s right, Branson:

In regards to ideas for a golf trip, I’d like to mention Branson, MO. I know the old joke about it being the place old people take their parents, but the golf is pretty good, with awesome scenery. There are 3 or 4 top-notch courses on one property including Tiger’s new one, but also many others in the area. I can’t speak to the night life but it isn’t a dry county or anything like that so a few young bucks could probably manage to put a shine on without too much trouble.

• Mike S. in Arvada, CO has a suggestion:

I’ve been enjoying reading Screencaps ever since it started, and there’s nothing like a lil’ morning Joe to go with my cup of joe to get the day started before pounding out engineering designs.  I don’t have a yard to mow here in Arvada, CO, but I do appreciate Doing Hard Things and love seeing what you post from other men (and women) doing it hard the right way.  My church buddies here in Colorado share the same thought, and we routinely swap stories at our 6 am men’s breakfast on Fridays. Current projects we have going include building trailers for ski-doos, making guns, and installing lift kits on trucks.  Nothing more satisfying than busting out the penetrating oil, torch, sledge, and impact driver to replace 20-year-old ball joints and suspension components.

Greg H was asking about unique golf destinations and I’d recommend anything in the Rockies, but in particular, Evergreen public golf course and Interlocken golf club near Denver.  You’ll have a good chance as seeing wildlife at Evergreen, there’s a lot of amazing drives all through at area of the Rockies up to Echo lake, and you can gamble at Central City near Idaho Springs.  Stop off at Tommyknocker Brewery and Beau Jo’s pizza, or if you want a hidden gem, grab a burger at Two Bears Tap and Grill near the exit to the casinos.

Evergreen is where you might have to navigate around elk who are known to wander the course. Good luck playing through the wildlife.

• Ben S. has a huge list of suggestions and writes, “thank you for the daily screencaps and the daily moment of sanity they provide.”

  1. St. George, Utah — We played Sand Hollow and The Ledges.  Copper Rock and Coral Canyon also get great reviews.
  2. Mesquite, Nevada — Wolf Creek and Conestoga are the 2 must plays.  Several other options to round out the trip.
  3. Las Vegas, Nevada — I know Vegas is hardly off the beaten path, but the 3 Paiute courses 50 min NW of Vegas deliver.  We stayed well off the Strip at the Suncoast, which made the drive 15-20 minutes.  Across the street is a complex of restaurants and bars.  Highly recommend Echo & Rig for a fantastic meal.
  4. Pawley’s Island, SC — Gets you south of Myrtle Beach and out of that hot mess.  Start with Caledonia and True Blue, both designed by the way-too-early-departed genius, Mike Strantz.
  5. Pinehurst, NC — Last on the list, but certainly not least.  Pinehurst has 9 courses + a short course, and has plenty of bars and restaurants.  The downside is that Pinehurst resort itself can feel a bit like a golf factory (plus #2 and #4 are very expensive).  Just as good, if not better, are Pine Needles, Mid-Pines, and Southern Pines.  All restored to their original Donald Ross designs, with A LOT of history to them (Pine Needles hosts the Women’s US Open again this year).  Also, a must play is Tobacco Road about 35 minutes north.  Another Mike Strantz course, it is hands down my group’s favorite course we’ve ever played.  Hard looking but very playable, scenic, and 18 unique holes with the slopes and crazy greens that create the moments and stories a group re-lives for years as part of a shared experience.  It’s unlike anything else I’ve found.

• And Greg V. has his own golf suggestion:

Best combo for golf and nightlife that is really affordable is Biloxi, MS. Stay at Beau Rivage casino under a “stay and play” package. The Beau course, Fallen Oak, is as good as any course in the country and there are a few others in the area – I recommend The Preserve because there is a great BBQ joint in the woods nearby called The Shed. Seafood restaurants are awesome and the people down there are incredible.

I have been going to MS for golf and Gambling for about 30 years and it never gets old.

• That should be enough golf trip suggestions for the week. Let’s move on to the parenting section of Screencaps and Jonathan E. having his head on a swivel for the TNML community:

For all the dads out there with little ones, like 7 and under, Guess Who? is a great game to play!

Of course, if you’re in TNML, you’ve got to choose this character:

• Finally this morning, I see where Pfizer’s CEO is saying his company’s booster shot will be enough to “maintain protection” against omicron. I’m no scientist, but didn’t that variant just hit the streets less than 30 days ago? It takes NFL replay booths more time to determine a ball breaking the plane of the end zone than it did for Pfizer to determine that getting jabbed again will keep you A-OK.

Let’s go out there and have another great December day of work. Your two weeks of doing nothing around the holidays will be here before you know it.
