A Venezuelan woman defied the odds and saved her children from certain death by drinking her own urine while shipwrecked.
Mariely Chacón and her two children, aged 6 and 2, were on a simple boating day trip with five other people when a large wave split the boat’s hull apart on September 3. To keep her children alive for the subsequent four days on a life raft, Chacón drank her own urine in order to help her body produce enough breastmilk to sustain the children.
The children were discovered by rescuers earlier this week, dehydrated and clinging to their mother’s dead body.
“The mother who died kept her children alive by breastfeeding them and drinking her own urine,” a spokesman for Instituto Nacional de los Espacios Acuáticos (INEA) said. “She died three or four hours before the rescue from dehydration after drinking no water for three days.”
The children’s nanny, a 25-year-old woman, also survived the riveting ordeal, requiring treatment for severe dehydration and first-degree burns upon rescue. According to boat logs, five other passengers from the ship have not been found, including the children’s father. Authorities say it is highly unlikely that anymore survivors will be found.
In summation, this amazing woman watched her husband drown, stared certain death in the face, and fought tooth and nail for survival anyways. Her determination is a testament to the human spirit, and because of it, her children received the greatest gift one person can bestow upon another. Enjoy your weekend, enjoy your freedoms, and enjoy your beautiful life.
