GM John Lynch Says 49ers Are Not Expecting Jimmy Garoppolo To Take A Pay Cut

The San Francisco 49ers did what many felt they would on Thursday, selecting North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance with the third overall pick.

There's no question that Lance will be the Niners' quarterback of the future, as you don't pick a quarterback with the third pick and not play him eventually.

The question is - will he start the season or will Jimmy Garoppolo, the longtime Niners QB who has been told all along that he would be the staring quarterback for the team.

One thing that seems clear is that the Niners are not going to make Garoppolo restructure his contract or take a pay cut.

According to San Francisco Chronicle writer Eric Branch, GM John Lynch says that Garoppolo won't be asked to take a new deal or pay cut.

“I think it’s a testament to the commitment of our ownership,” Lynch said. “When this process was going on, that’s a question that we asked. We arrived at a point where that was our preference: to draft a quarterback and keep Jimmy, provided that someone didn’t come and just completely blow us way (with a trade offer). And they gave us that commitment. Yeah, we could do that. And we’re happy to have that situation right now. Because we believe it’s a very strong one.”
