Gators Add Tyson Summers To Staff As Analyst

The Florida Gators have added Tyson Summers to their football staff as an analyst, AL.com's Matt Zenitz reports.

Summers will arrive at Florida after two years as Colorado Buffaloes defensive coordinator, ESPN reports.

In January, Summers was out in Colorado and the article states it came as a surprise after the team's defense excelled in several areas in 2020, ranking 13th nationally in third-down conversions allowed (31.8%) and third in fourth-down conversions allowed (10%), leading the Pac-12 in both categories.

The Buffaloes tied for second in the Pac-12 with 15 sacks and led the league in tackles for loss (49), ranking seventh nationally in tackles for loss per game (8.2), ESPN reports.

He's the former head coach at Georgia Southern and also brought coordinator experience from UCF.

SI.com reports the Georgia native has a total of 19 years of coaching experience, mostly on the defensive side of the ball, but does have a year under his belt as a co-special teams coordinator.

Summers has coached or worked as a quality control specialist in 146 FBS games, including three bowl games — 2012 Beef O’Brady’s, 2014 Fiesta, 2014 St. Petersburg, 2017 Rose/CFP Semifinal and the 2017 CFP Championship.

He played linebacker at Presbyterian College in South Carolina from 1998 to 2001 and began his coaching career in the high school ranks right after coaching defensive backs.

SI.com reports that Florida often utilizes analysts to assist the coaching staff on the opposite side of the ball from where they have experience coaching.

"Most notably, former UF defensive analyst Garrick McGee was hired last year after a long career coaching quarterbacks and coordinating offenses," the article reads. "After one season of helping Gators defensive coordinator Todd Grantham prepare gameplans and study opposing offenses, McGee was promoted to quarterbacks coach for UF."

His father, Andy, was a running back at the University of Florida in the early 1970s, per his Colorado bio.
