It’s that time of the week again. Every Wednesday, I post this comprehensive guide highlighting some of the notable unprophetic and wrong predictions and other observations that are relevant to the previous week’s sports news. Let’s begin.
BEST OF THE WEEK
VILLANOVA DOMINATES THE FINAL FOUR
This past week during the Final Four, Villanova destroyed Kansas and Michigan to win Nova’s third National Championship. Since the Wildcats were big favorites to win both games, there weren’t very many people to roast after they won. However, there were some…
Colin Cowherd REALLY liked Michigan with the 6.5 points:

How about this bozo?
After a small amount of careless consideration, with no due respect to Villanova, I have decided that Michigan gonna win tonight. ✍️

NFL DRAFT CLASSICS
With the NFL Draft coming up at the end of the month, it’s a great time to start including some of my favorite old draft takes in my Freezing Cold Take Report.
- Here’s an excerpt from a Kevin Mannix article published in the Boston Herald the day after the 2000 draft when the Patriots drafted Tom Brady:
- In the March 1, 2014 edition of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Randy Galloway explored why the Cowboys should trade Tony Romo and draft Johnny Manziel:
- After the 1998 draft, Miami Dolphins’ head coach Jimmy Johnson, defended the team’s decision to pass on Marshall star wide receiver Randy Moss in the first round, and explained that he picked a better WR prospect in the 3rd round: East Carolina Wide Receiver Larry Shannon. From the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel:
- Speaking of Randy Moss and the 1998 draft, Jay Mariotti was psyched that the Bears took running back Curtis Enis over Moss. Here is some of what he wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times after the draft:
- This 1998 Peyton Manning/Ryan Leaf take comes courtesy of Jason Lisk of The Big Lead:

Here’s more from Lisk, about the article:
For everyone asking, I found this in an article in the New Castle (PA) News from April 18, 1998. Four writers gave their draft thoughts and that was from someone named Kevin Flowers.
I'm doing a project where I'm searching for old scouting comments pre-draft on QBs.

CUBS REPORTER JUMPS IN LAKE
MLB Opening Day kicked off Thursday. Just prior to the Chicago Cubs opener against the Marlins in Miami, Michael Cerami, a Cubs Reporter for the MLBs Bleacher Nation, tweeted this:
If Ian Happ leads off today's game with a home run, I will jump in Lake Michigan later today.
— Michael Cerami (@Michael_Cerami) March 29, 2018
What happened? Happ went yard on the very first pitch of the game. This put Cermani a tough spot. Just an hour later, the reporter proved that he was a man of his word.

Respect.
OVERRATED BRYCE HARPER HITS HOME RUN
Funny sequence from Sunday’s Reds/Nationals game in Cincinnati. During Bryce Harper’s at bat for the Nationals in the top of the 9th inning, you can clearly hear a fan from the crowd yell out “overrated!” as the Reds’ pitcher is readying to throw a 2-2 pitch. Immediately after, Harper blasted opposite field home run. How about that for a “life comes at you fast” moment?

TAKE-AVERSARIES
On April 4, 1983, massive underdog North Carolina State University, coached by the late Jim Valvano, shocked the world by defeating the Houston Cougars in the college basketball National Championship game. The Cougars team was led by future NBA Hall of Famers Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler. The clip of Valvano running around the floor after the Wolfpack’s game winning dunk is ubiquitous during March and will forever be celebrated as one of College Basketball’s most iconic moments.
Before the game, Houston, who had a 31-2 overall record, was considered to be such a powerhouse, that there was an article on the morning of the game questioning whether they were as good as the NBA’s Houston Rockets, who were, at the time, the one of the worst teams in the NBA. From the Binghamton (NY) Evening Press:
Nowadays, we see these types of hypotheticals all the time. If you thought they were something that was created in the social media era, guess again. Ironically, the discussion turned out to be moot, as the Cougars weren’t able to even beat NC State.
Below are a few examples of some college teams who didn’t win a national championship but were thought by some to be better than a pro team.
In 2015, there were many people who believed that Kentucky, who went undefeated in the regular season, could beat some NBA teams.

"As they are constructed right now I think Kentucky can give the 76ers and a lot of NBA teams a run for their money" @jerrystackhouse

How many NBA teams could Kentucky beat right now? #impressive
— Mike Barnes (@MikeBarnesMedia) February 11, 2015
Kentucky ended up losing it’s only game of the season to Wisconsin in the Final Four.
Also, who can forget the 2016 Alabama Crimson Tide football team, who many thought could beat the Browns before they lost to Clemson in the National Championship game.
Could Alabama beat the Browns, according to @finebaum, yes. Full episode https://t.co/htoaCr8KQG pic.twitter.com/7d1sTDItaQ

#Bama could probably beat Cleveland Browns…

VAULT IT
- Veteran Houston-based NFL writer John McClain thinks “Bill O’Brien is the coach to lead the Texans to the Super Bowl.”
- Yahoo! Sports writer Jordan Schultz is confident that the Cowboys will cut Dez Bryant after the NFL Draft.
- Washington Redskins Head Coach Jay Gruden thinks that the Redskins are “without a doubt” better with newly acquired quarterback Alex Smith then they were with previous starter Kirk Cousins.
- According to Tiger Woods, “this year is going to be different” at the Masters.
That’s it for this week.
