Former Kentucky, Auburn QB Joey Gatewood Picks New Landing Spot

Third time's the charm right? Well, Joey Gatewood certainly hopes so.

The former Kentucky and Auburn quarterback has been his next college destination. According to Brandon Marcello with 247Sports, Gatewood is reuniting with Gus Malzahn down in Orlando with the UCF Knights.

“Former Auburn and Kentucky quarterback Joey Gatewood has decided to enroll at UCF, a person familiar with the decision tells 247Sports,” Marcello reported, via The Spun. “Gatewood could arrive to UCF’s campus as soon as this week, the source said.”

Earlier this week, Gatewood once again lost a quarterback battle, which is what led him to the transfer portal in the first place. The first time around, Bo Nix of Auburn beat him out. This time, Penn State transfer Will Levis was named the starter for Kentucky.

This past season, Gatewood attempted only 35 pass attempts in Lexington. Even worse, he only completed 17 of those 35 attempts, marking a 48.6 completion percentage. He also averaged a putrid 3.1 yards per attempt.

It's odd that he chose to reunite with a coach who chose another quarterback over him the first time around, but maybe he feels like he'll eventually become the starter if Malzahn doesn't have that Auburn pressure pushing for the competition.
