Fisher Excited About QB Progress, Not Ready To Tip His Hand At Starter

The Texas A&M Aggies are about halfway through the grind of fall camp, but head coach Jimbo Fisher isn’t ready to name a starting guy under center just yet.

Fisher said he’s pleased with what he’s seen so far and how well the team is progressing, especially quarterbacks Haynes King and Zach Calzada, KTRE reports.

Despite the ongoing battle for the starting spot, Fisher has not given any indication about when he’ll name a starting quarterback but says he is confident in both of their abilities. He also says he has adjusted the way he coaches them in practice to help them along.

”There are days I’ll teach, there are days I’ll ride ’cause it goes back to the same thing, that mental toughness, that mental grind,” Fisher said, per KTRE. “All those great ones are mentally tough. Someone’s gotten onto them and pushed them and prodded them as they went on. That depends on the individual, the time, the situation, and where I think their development is. When they need to be pushed, when they need to be challenged, or when they need to be eased off. I think that’s a feeling you have to go with. I’ve been riding our guys pretty good. I have. I’ve been pushing them because they’re young, and I want to see. I want to see who can mentally do the things that you have to do. They’re also progressing very nicely.”

King appeared in two games last year, and Calzada saw the field in three games in 2019.

Texas A&M Football is ranked No. 6 in the first edition of the Associated Press Preseason Poll to begin the 2021 season, released Monday. The Aggies are one of five SEC teams and the highest-ranked team from Texas in the preseason poll.
