Elon Musk Is Mad At Bernie Sanders On Twitter

Sen. Bernie Sanders tweeted that wealthy people must pay their "fair share" in taxes over the weekend. Elon Musk noticed Sanders' tweet in a somewhat stunned manner. Why? Not because of the messaging, but because Sanders is still alive. Musk must have forgotten.

"I keep forgetting you're still alive," Musk tweeted at Sanders.

Still waiting for a response, Musk shot again: "Want me to sell more stock, Bernie?"

It's true. Musk is willing to sell right now. Simply saying the word could be all that it takes. 

Last week, Musk's trust sold $1.2 billion in Tesla stock. Furthermore, Musk sold a total of $6.9 billion worth of Tesla shares. That amounts to less than 4% of the shares he holds directly.

So chalk up Sanders' tweet as what we call a "subtweet." Musk certainly falls in the "extremely wealthy" group of folks. According to Bloomberg's Billionaires Index, Musk's net worth sits at around $285 billion, the largest in the world.

Sanders' subtweet runs deep. Along with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sanders proposed a  3% percent total annual tax on wealth exceeding $1 billion and a 2% annual wealth tax on the net worth of households and trusts ranging from $50 million to $1 billion. That means Elon, and Elon knows it.
