Dodgers OF Mookie Betts Exits Game With Hip Issue

Videos by OutKick

Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder and frequent lead-off hitter Mookie Betts left last night’s game against the Colorado Rockies with right hip irritation, his team announced. The second-place Dodgers won the game 9-2. Betts exited the game in the seventh inning.

The former MVP was running out his third double of the evening when he pulled up gingerly with a limp at second base. Team trainers immediately pulled him from the game. The hip discomfort appears to have been a season-long issue for Betts.

“It’s kind of been nagging him all year,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “I think a lot of the running on the bases kind of caught up to him and irritated him a little bit. But I’ll have him down (Sunday) and he’ll be ready for that (San Francisco) series on Monday.”

Mookie was having a monster game when he exited: 4-for-4 with a dinger, three doubles, three runs, and an RBI. The team will certainly need his production down the stretch as the boys in blue try to repeat as World Series champions in a tightly contested NL West. The Giants, Dodgers, and Padres all sit within 5.5 games of each other headed into the second half of the season.

“I’m good,” Betts said of his hip. “I’ve been dealing with it. I think I just made it a little more bad today than normal. But I’m fine.”

In 2018, while with the Red Sox, he became the first player in MLB history to win the Most Valuable Player, Silver Slugger, Gold Glove, batting title, and World Series in the same season.

  1. IMO now should be the time to rest him up for the stretch run, but unfortunately they’ve got 7 games against San Francisco coming up in the next two weeks that are critical. I’m sure he feels like he has to be on the field for those. They need to be careful with him, because he ought to be on a 10 day dl stint to let that hip rest and heal right now.
