Derrick Rose Says He Shouldn't Be Idolized And He's Right

Derrick Rose turned 32 yesterday, and he used his big day to remind us on Instagram that we shouldn't idolize him. He's absolutely right. Our celebrity worship should end before it's too late.

"Please don’t idolize me. I’m not your typical hooper/celeb or whatever you want to call it. Find out who you are, master something and find a way to express whatever you’ve mastered," Rose said. "It’s all about your perception. Once you do that I SWEAR it’s easier to see this game everyone is playing. Don’t be apart of the magic show. Look away! Spurious love please pls stay away!!!!"

Most athletes today preach their beliefs and lifestyles on all platforms because they believe we should use them as idols. They not only see themselves as influencers but as a driving force to help us accomplish our own goals. Derrick Rose acknowledges that our inspiration should come from people that are like us.

He's right.

"It's all about your perception. Once you do that I swear it's easier to see this game everyone's playing." The former MVP sees the phony motives of the athletes trying to lead us. It takes a special type of man to take a step back and resist some of the pressure to influence the values and behavior of fans.

He's refusing control we see everywhere

Kylie Jenner, however, offers an opinion that is polar opposite to the one given by Rose. She seems to suggest that her body itself ought to inspire people to follow her lead. Jenner's narcissism indicates that we give entirely too much credit and power to people who don't deserve it.

If we had more athletes and celebrities like Derrick Rose and fewer like Kylie Jenner, we would be much better off as a society. Until we start idolizing our parents and people living like us, we'll continue down this path.
