Daniel Jones Might Be The QB1 Giants Believe Him To Be, But His Receivers Have To Help Him

Odell Beckham Jr. was once the face of the New York Giants offense. Over the last couple of years, however, he's been in Cleveland with little success. But it isn't just Beckham. New York has struggled to move on as well.

We still don't know what the Giants have in second-year quarterback Daniel Jones. As a former first-round pick, the Duke product has shown flashes at times, but he lacks consistency.

As Ed Valentine with Big Blue View points out in a recent piece, some of that comes from the lack of effective options in the passing game. Saquon Barkley's return will obviously give the offense a significant boost in 2021, but more is needed.

“I think we certainly need to help our offense a little bit this offseason, be it free agency and the draft. I think we need some more pieces there. ... That will be a priority for us,” co-owner John Mara said during his end-of-season videoconference, via BBV.

Evan Engram has been up and down at tight end, and Darius Slayton took a big step back in Year 2.  Sterling Shepard struggled to stay healthy and played like a second or third option. Steady, but nothing to write home about.

The front office has put a lot of effort into rebuilding the offensive line. Andrew Thomas, Matthew Peart and Will Hernandez were all Day 1 or 2 picks over the last couple years, and Kevin Zeitler was a big addition at right guard.

There's still work to be done there, but there has been an effort.

Now it's time to address the pass-catching options, as Mara pointed out. There aren't a ton of top-flight options in free agency, but maybe a Will Fuller, Chris Godwin, JuJu Smith-Schuster or Corey Davis could be considered.

With the No. 12 pick in April's draft, maybe that is where New York can address wide receiver. Ja'Marr Chase, DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle and Chris Olave are a few names to consider. Either way, something must be done.

And if Jones continues to struggle at that point, the quarterback position can then be addressed.
