No. 13 Dallas Baptist secured their first-ever win in an NCAA Super Regional over the No. 14 Virginia Cavaliers, defeating the team 6-5 despite a four-hour rain delay, and they did it in a dramatic comeback.
The Patriots closed it out in the ninth inning to secure the victory. With the win, DBU (41-16) is now just one win away from the program’s first-ever trip to Omaha for the College World Series, the program said.
After a scoreless first inning from junior right-handed pitcher Dominic Hamel, the Patriots’ offense jumped all over Cavaliers’ left-handed senior ace Andrew Abbot.
Patriots’ River Town singled up the middle to put a runner on for Jackson Glenn. Glenn then barreled a 1-2 fastball deep into the bleachers over the left-field wall, making it 2-0 Patriots. DBU kept the lead until the fifth inning when UVA scored five runs and took the lead, the Patriots only responded with two runs at the bottom of the inning.
DBU made up for it by scoring two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh while holding Virginia scoreless through the rest of the game. The Patriots beat the Cavaliers 6-5, and the teams face off on Sunday.
