Washington, D.C. Makes Delusional Comment About City Amid Massive Crime Issues

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser wants people to stay optimistic about the nation's capital amid major crime issues.

D.C. has turned into what feels like a war zone over recent years, and crime is absolutely out of control. Just recently, there was a mass shooting that left two dead and five wounded and sparked a huge manhunt. Just another casual day in America's capital.

Homicides were up 36% and carjacking nearly doubled, according to Axios. Yet, Bowser doesn't seem overly concerned. She told Axios that 2023 was rough, but, "Don't be so down on D.C."

And while crime has seen a slight decline in the early months of 2024, the city still feels and is wildly unsafe, especially for anyone who lacks situational awareness.

Washington, D.C. has gone to hell.

Unfortunately, I live in D.C., and have for several years. It's hard to put into words just how bad the city has gotten. There was a time when I felt fine walking around at night. Now, I try to avoid it if I can.

This is a common exchange when people find out where I live:

"Where do you live?"

"Washington, D.C."

"What's that like?"

"Have you ever seen the movie ‘Black Hawk Down'? Best comparison I can make."

*Stunned look.

Below is a list of personal experiences in Washington, D.C. in just the past year or so:

  • Witnessed massive gunfight on Memorial Day weekend 40 yards from my backdoor.
  • Walked up on a dead body on the street corner.
  • Dealt with two potential armed robberies.
  • Had to intervene in a third armed robbery to get a woman's stuff back.
  • Watched a man casually smoke crack in a bar like it was no big deal.
  • Watched a man masturbate in public.
  • Watched a man with a butcher knife rob someone of his drugs.
  • Found a drug addict in a catatonic state on my front steps.
  • Watch a man break into the neighbor's house, and was just released by the cops.
  • Missed a shooting near a school by mere minutes.
  • Got cracked in the head by a beer bottle thanks to a drug addict.
  • Had a homeless guy throw a glass bottle at me.
  • Had an adult woman in a diaper try to fight me at a liquor store.
  • Watched a guy parade around with a knife outside of a popular D.C. bar. Cops did nothing.
  • Regularly see open drug use and people using the bathroom on the street.
  • Man exposed his penis and began humping a pole outside of a popular restaurant.
  • Pitbulls constantly walking around not on leashes.
  • Active shooter threat while buying a six pack of beer.
  • Drive-by shooting outside of a bar on St. Patrick's Day a few years ago. Girlfriend scolded me for trying to get a tactical view of the gunmen instead of hiding.
  • Homeless guy implied he was going to murder me because I didn't buy him beer. Took cops about 30 minutes to get there.
  • Two different domestic violence situations that played out in traffic.

Those are relatively recent memories off the top of my head, and that's just to one person. Furthermore, I definitely don't live in even close to the worst part of the city. There are significantly worse areas, and people who have dealt with much more serious issues.

For example, a young volunteer was gunned down during a robbery attempt. Another innocent life lost in the city Bowser allegedly has control over.

Seriously, watch the video in the tweet below, and tell me it's legit not a scene out of "Black Hawk Down" if you close your eyes and just listen.

So, no, I will not keep the faith in this hell of a city. I used to love it. Now, every single time I step out the door I have to wonder if I'll experience combat on the streets of America's capital. Shame on Bowser and everyone else who let it get this bad. Let me know your thoughts at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.
