'South Park' Creators Sign Huge $900M Deal With Viacom, New Content Coming

South Park fans received incredible news Thursday when it was announced Trey Parker and Matt Stone signed a $900 million deal with ViacomCBS Inc. to go on a content-creating bender over the next six years. The deal, considered one of the biggest in television history, will clear the way for Parker and Stone to start pumping content into Viacom's Comedy Central and then to create movies for Paramount+, Viacom's entry into the streaming content world.

Bloomberg reports that first piece of content will be a "movie set in the world of 'South Park' that will debut some time before the end of the year." The movies, according to Bloomberg, will be used to "accelerate" the growth of Paramount+. The move by Viacom in the entertainment division appears to mirror the strategy NBC will use with its Peacock streaming service where at least one Notre Dame game will be shown in 2021.

Current Paramount+ subscriptions cost $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. That price does not include local live CBS programming. As of June, Viacom stated it had more than 42 million streaming subscribers across its offerings, which include Showtime, Paramount+ and BET+.

“We did a ‘South Park’ movie in 1999, and we’ve never done another one because the show has been so satisfying,” Stone told Bloomberg. “Now we’re older, and the idea of what streaming movies can be is pretty promising.”

Translation: This is an amazing offer from Viacom.

As for the financials, Parker and Stone are expected to receive 50% in future online deals for the show, and Bloomberg reports the company formed by Parker and Stone to handle their business dealings is now worth over $1 billion.

“Comedy Central has been our home for 25 years and we’re really happy that they’ve made a commitment to us for the next 75 years,” Parker and Stone said in the official press release. “When we came to ViacomCBS with a different way to produce the show during the pandemic, Chris (McCarthy), Nina (Diaz), Keyes (Hill-Edgar) and Tanya (Giles) were immediately supportive and enabled us to try something new that turned out to be really well received. We can’t wait to get back to doing traditional South Park episodes but now we can also try out new formats. It’s great to have partners who will always take a chance with us.”
