Officer Devin Makes Her Debut, Tiger's Out & About, Plus Olympic Gold Medalist Caeleb Dressel Gets Emotionall
I know you guys like positive stories to get your day rolling so let's start with this one
OutKick copy editor Cortney Wilmering took time out of her Wednesday to tweet about how her mother, Karen, ran the Big Ten 10k over the weekend, and typically that would just be a proud moment where a daughter congratulates mom and moves on. Not in Karen's case.
Cortney writes that her mom was "was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy when she was in her early 40s. For the next 20 years, she could more or less function normally. She could work, take walks, and pick up her grandchildren."
"In the last several years, her decline was precipitous. She could barely walk from her car to a booth in a restaurant. She frequently got lightheaded and short of breath. She had to retire from a teaching career that she loved."
Things got so bad with Karen's heart that in February, she was put on a heart donor list. Cortney writes that her mother went through a heart transplant March 28 and then this Tuesday, Karen Wilmering proved she's back to living life and doing what many won't even get off the couch to accomplish.
Mrs. Wilmering went out and completed the Big Ten 10k in 1:21:03 for an average speed of 2.5 MPH.
• I tend to have a few excuses this time of year for slowing it down a little bit. The dog days of summer kick in. It's brutally humid. The air conditioning starts to feel too good after the grilled bacon burgers and beers. The mosquitos have been horrible. Then something like Mrs. W.'s story comes along to kick me in the butt. Now I have no choice tonight but to add a dog walk after my Thursday Night Mowing League duties.
• It was good to hear from several of you on the whole HBO Woodstock '99 documentary nonsense from Wednesday. The common theme from those of you who chimed in is that the wokes have infiltrated everything, including the Woodstock history books. There's not a single layer of history that the wokes won't use their 2020-21 lens to analyze things in current terms.
The next thing you know, the wokes will start analyzing the hierarchy of The Smurfs and how it's a reflection of life in 2021. No, I'm not doing a Google search to see if they have already analyzed the Smurfs. I refuse to let them get me emotional on a day when I have mowing and a dog walk planned.
• Remember where restaurants warned they would raise prices to help pay for worker wages? Of course you guys do. Chipotle announced menu prices are going up as much as 4% to pay for the wage increases. The same will happen at ConAgra. Corona prices will be going up. The same will happen at Harley. And the wokest of the wokes, Hasbro, announced prices will be going up for the holiday buying season.
You've been warned. Go get those burritos and Hasbro toys before your wallet takes a hit. Good luck out there.
• Do you have good news to share like Cortney's mom making it back from heart surgery? Let's hear what's going on out there amongst you guys.
