Newsweek's Batya Ungar-Sargon Dismantles Media's Perception Of Michigan Voters On 'Real Time with Bill Maher'

"Newsweek" opinion editor Batya Ungar-Sargon dispelled on "Real Time with Bill Maher" a notion that President Joe Biden is losing ground in the polls in Michigan because of his stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Maher read a question from a fan towards the end of the segment in which the fan asked if Democrats should worry about the fact that 100,000 liberal Michiganders are uncommitted on which presidential candidate they’d vote for. The talk show host insinuated that because Michigan’s noticeably large Muslim population is disappointed by Biden’s support of Israel, they are threatening to vote for Donald Trump. It’s worth noting that Biden won Michigan in the 2020 general election.

However, Ungar-Sargon doesn’t see it that way. She highlighted that Biden’s strong push for electric vehicles has done more to hurt his relationship with Michigan voters than anything else. As we all know, Michigan is kind of famous for its thriving auto industry and is the home of Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Stellantis.

"The media really wants to put this narrative out there that Biden is going to lose Michigan over Gaza when the truth is he's going to lose Michigan over 600,000 auto workers," Ungar-Sargon said. "Because his EV market was extremely punishing to auto workers. There's been this big realignment where working class Americans are very much on the Trump train."

She further added that the Democratic Party is trying to paint this in a different light rather than face the consequences of their actions.

"People who used to be Democrats and used to vote for Democrats. Rather than admit that, this outrage that the Democrats lost the working class vote, and try to figure out how we can appeal to them again, they’re looking for excuses and other things to blame. Like, this war in Gaza, or they’ll call them 'deplorables,’ or they’ll call them ‘racists.’"

To bring home this speech filled with a refreshing level of common sense and logic, she highlighted how Trump has used former political policies employed by the Democrats to gain popularity with the American people.

"They don’t want to admit that Trump has picked up a lot of the policies that used to be Democratic policies in the ‘90s, like controlling the border for example. The idea that an open border, and mass migration, is extremely punishing to the working class…It’s class warfare against the working class."

The crowd responded with applause, and frankly, I can’t blame them. It’s not often that anyone, let alone someone who works for a fairly liberal news site, advocates for working-class Americans these days.
