Let's start this morning with an apology

First off, my apologies to GERARD W. in northern Illinois. "Gotta bust your balls here," GERARD wrote Friday. "You have posted 3 of my e-mails to you in Outkick and all 3 you had my name as Gerald.  This happens all the time and it’s not a big deal.  Just wanted to give you heads up. Have a great weekend!"

My eyes aren't great these days, GERARD! I'm also thinking that I'm seeing GERALD because my grandfather was GERALD KINSEY and my eyes aren't used to seeing GERARD. But GERALD went by Jerry. Now my head is completely spinning.

I promise GERARD that I'll never refer to him as GERALD again. This is now firmly burnt into my brain and GERARD'S email will trigger me going forward.

I know I’m a little late on this, but I love how you always try to remind people of the simple things in life, and why it’s important to keep that in perspective. Twitter and Facebook try to ruin things that should be fun. That’s why I stopped being a part of those platforms years ago. And it’s why your columns are daily reading for me. 

I think that’s why something as simple as the TNML is so popular.  Positive news DOES sell, if done the right way. I’m sure your clicks reflect that.  At the risk of upsetting my girlfriend, nothing gives me the joy of seeing these two faces every time I come home. If nothing else, it’s a 3-way tie. Lol

Whether I’m gone for 4 hours or 4 days, they can’t be more excited to see me walk in that door (though after a few days of being gone, the barks are a little louder). They rarely leave my side. And it’s impossible to be in a bad mood when all they care about is being around you.

• Tim G. in Ohio sent word that he missed TNML because he was cleaning up the mess caused at his dad's place near Sturgis, MI. Tim says 90 mph straight-line winds hammered the property for 20-25 minutes and dropped several trees that needed to be cleared so it wouldn't kill his dad's yard.

Didn’t send a report this week.  Got a little down from getting over the China Virus, all the heat, dog days of summer and my grass looks like crap this time of year.
 
I decided to just sit in the outdoor activity control center (garage #3), watch Baywatch reruns and have some Jack.

Then Mrs. C brings crew chief Landry down to do his business outside and I could see the frustration in his eyes.  This is what I felt coming from that 20 lbs. of Westie who’s celebrating his 5th birthday today:

“He Dad, what’s up, it’s Thursday, league night, why aren’t you mowing?
 
You’re what tired, hot, depressed, that’s BS?  You chose to wear the TNML shield, it’s not given to you, it’s earned.  It’s about the league, the brotherhood, doing what’s right and enjoying your weekends.  This is what we plan all offseason for, fertilizing, re-seeding, weeding, watering.  I’ve worked my paws to the bone all week to give you a mower ready to go on Thursday and you’re in here in your pity party. Get the F up, go mow and make us proud!”

So I reached deep down inside and I got on that John Deere and mowed last night.  It felt glorious once again and am so glad I did it.  Thanks Landry!  Sometimes we all need a kick in the pants to get going.

• And with that, it's time to get down to business with the pigskin. Nebraska-Illinois is at 1 ET on Fox. Let's get those patio TVs fired up. Is it a great lineup today? Not at all, but we're going to go out there and be positive. College football is back. Enjoy it.
