Indy Mayor's COVID Comeback Speech Sure Sounds Like It Came From 'Scent Of A Woman'

One of my favorite acts from politicians is where they want constituents to feel like they're being super sincere and caring, but then they're really just pulling movie lines out of their memory banks to mask their phoniness. The latest example is Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett (D) who last week dialed up his favorite Lt. Col. Frank Slade speech from Scent of a Woman to welcome patrons back to the Indianapolis Symphony.

Like a true politician, Mayor Joe went into that deep, caring politician voice where he wanted those in the crowd to know they'd survived the COVID war. They'd survived! But aw-shucks, there's so much more to do. We can't stop now, people.

Dial up those movie lines, Mayor Joe! Give 'em to us! You know those Frank Slade lines by heart. Let them fly!

OMG Mayor Joe...yesssss thank you for this philosophy...this wisdom...these amazing're the greatest...yes, we must protect it, embrace it, Mayor Joe promises! Blah, blah, blah, blah. Meanwhile, this blowhard won't lift a mask order for fully vaccinated people until June 7.

The Scent of a Woman screenplay was written by Bo Goldman, who also wrote the screenplay for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and won an Academy Award for that work. The mayor should at least thank Mr. Goldman, who's still going strong at 88, on his amazing work.

If Mayor Joe really wants to impress us with his ability to work a Pacino movie line into a heartfelt message, let's see Joe channel Vincent Hanna in the 1995 classic Heat.

"Cause she's got a great ass... and you got your head all the way up it! Ferocious, aren't I? When I think of asses, a woman's ass, something comes out of me," Hanna says to Alan Marciano, played by Hank Azaria.

Your move, mayor.
