'Harry Potter' Actress Miriam Margolyes Thinks Adult Fans Should Stop Loving The Series: 'It's For Children'

"Harry Potter" actress Miriam Margolyes thinks that if you’re not a high-school student and you’re still waiting on your Hogwarts letter, you need a strong dose of reality.

Margolyes made a brief appearance as "Professor Sprout" in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," the second of eight films in the iconic cinema franchise. The series became a worldwide phenomenon in the early 2000s, and captured the hearts of millions of people.

But the actress claimed in an interview with New Zealand’s 1News that too many fans - who are now way too old to enroll at Hogwarts - should flat-out stop enjoying the franchise.

"I worry about Harry Potter fans because they should be over that by now," Margolyes said. "It was 25 years ago, and it's for children. I think it's for children."

Before you think she’s being a curmudgeon, she does have more reason than most to make this claim. She said that she will occasionally record videos on Cameo for couples having a Harry Potter-themed wedding, which she finds troubling.

"They get stuck in it," she said. "I do Cameos, and people say, 'We're having a Harry Potter-themed wedding, and I think, 'Gosh, what's their first night of fun going to be?' I can't even think about it. No."

Gosh, I don’t want to think about it either now that you mention it.

She’s also said in the past that she’s never read the books and isn’t a fan of the movies. No wonder she has such a strong opinion about people who continue to love Harry Potter.

Margolyes Is Right About Harry Potter Fans…Sort Of

As a diehard "Lord of the Rings" fan, I take some level of pleasure in someone telling people to temper their excitement about the Harry Potter series. After all, if you are going to heavily invest in a fantasy world, Middle Earth is superior in every way.

Who would want to spend time obsessing over teenagers developing crushes on each other when you could watch Legolas shoot down dozens of orcs with his bow and arrows in the coolest ways possible?

But then again, I do have to defend my fellow fantasy enthusiasts and say that Margolyes is not doing the majority of Potter fans justice.

Yes, using any fantasy world as inspiration for your wedding is going way too far. Heck, you’ll never catch me walking down the aisle with a bow in hand and a quiver of arrows on my back looking to hunt some Orcs. If my wife left me at the altar after that, I wouldn't blame her.

But that doesn’t mean adults whole love Harry Potter can’t enjoy the  series past their childhood years.

Treasuring those movies could be a solid way to bond with your kids when they’re old enough to appreciate the movies. Furthermore, nurturing your imagination with a fairly wholesome universe isn’t a bad thing. Even adults need an escape from reality on occasion.

So if you’re a 30-year-old who knows they belong in the House of Gryffindor and can quote "The Deathly Hallows" Parts 1 and 2 word for word, don’t feel bad. We all need something to enliven our inner child every now and again. Enjoy your fandom…within reason.

And then go check out "The Lord of the Rings." It’s way better than anything J.K. Rowling could offer.
