D.C. Mayor Under Pressure From Republican Lawmakers To Rename Black Lives Matter Plaza After Hamas Support

The Mayor of Washington, D.C. is facing pressure to rename Black Lives Matter Plaza after some groups within the movement voiced support of terrorist organization Hamas.

A group of 25 Republican lawmakers sent a letter to D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser demanding the immediate renaming of the plaza and the removal of a street mural.

According to The Washington Examiner, the letter was sent Monday by a group led by Florida Senator Marco Rubio and Indiana Representative Jim Banks.

"BLM continues to openly celebrate the anti-Semitic Hamas terrorist attacks against Israel," it reads. "This stance is irreconcilable with American values. America must clearly affirm its stance against antisemitism, wherever it appears."

Letter Slammed BLM Group That Supported Hamas

The letter specifically singled out BLM Grassroots. This group has 26 branches and described the terrorist attack as a "desperate act of self-defense." Furthermore, the group left little room for interpretation by staying that "threw its support behind these murderous attacks."

Black Lives Matter Plaza sits fairly close to the White House and takes up about two blocks. The street mural in question features 35-foot letters spelling out the words "Black Lives Matter."

In case you were wondering, this project — undertaken after the death of George Floyd — cost just a shade under $8 million, per The Washington Post.

Black Lives Matter has been heavily criticized for misusing funds, and most recently for some groups within the movement voicing support for Hamas following the Oct. 7 terrorist attack in Israel that left around 1,400 civilians dead.

This seems like a fair enough ask from Republican lawmakers. Think about all the things that have been removed or renamed because they weren't inlock-step with progressive viewpoints.

Now, you've got members of a movement outright supporting terrorists. That seems like reason enough to have your street mural paved over and your plaza renamed.

Especially one in the nation's capital.
