Social Media Crushes Video Accusing America Of War Crimes Against Japan For Using Atomic Bombs

The internet is fired up over allegations America committed war crimes against Japan by dropping two atomic bombs.

WWII in the Pacific against Japan came to an end after President Harry Truman ordered atomic bombs to be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The Japanese quickly put their hands up after years of carnage, and the two bombs remain the most powerful weapons ever used in human history nearly 80 years later.

Did America commit war crimes? That's what some have argued for years. Of course, it's complete nonsense and can quickly be disregarded. Was dropping the bombs more complicated and nuanced than people view it? Without a doubt, but a war crime it most certainly was not.

Video torched for alleging America committed war crimes against Japan.

However, an AJ+ (the English arm of Al Jazeera) video tried to slam America as having committed war crimes and called out the movie "Oppenheimer" for not addressing the allegations.

The expert interviewed? Professor Naoko Wake, who is a historian of gender, sexuality, and illness in the twentieth century United States and the Pacific Rim at Michigan State.

When I think of WWII, I definitely think about gender and sexuality. Well done, AJ+. You can watch the video below, and then we'll unpack it.

People were, obviously, fired up on social media and reactions were all over the place. Check out some below, and hit me with your thoughts at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.

Now, I almost didn't even address this video because it's such a desperate cry for attention and because the discourse around it is mind-numbingly dumb from many people.

Reading a history book isn't hard, but it's apparently too complex for many people with access to the internet. Here's the facts of the matter.

Japan started the war against America, committed unspeakable atrocities and the United States gave the Japanese multiple opportunities to surrender. When the Japanese empire decided to hold out, the atomic bombs were used in order to end the war as quickly as possible.

Now, you will hear some people argue that the bombs had to be used because a mainland invasion could have killed a million Americans. That talking point has always been a bit odd to me seeing as how such a claim is impossible to prove.

America had one goal and one goal only: Get the war over with as fast as possible.

Once the atomic bombs were ready to use, Truman made the decision that the Japanese had every chance to quit and had not. The time for talking was over.

It wasn't a war crime. You can argue America shouldn't have crossed the rubicon of using WMDs, but that doesn't make hammering Hiroshima and Nagasaki a war crime.

So, no, I won't apologize for America dropping two atomic bombs. I would have been fine dropping a third if that's what it came to, but I'm glad it didn't. It's possible to recognize something isn't a war crime, while also recognizing the calculus that went into Truman's thinking was more nuanced than what some pretend online. I encourage everyone to read as much about WWII as possible. More education is always the answer. Let me know your thoughts at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.
