Cowboys Release Gerald McCoy Via Quad Injury Waiver In His Contract

The Cowboys included a quad injury waiver in the contract they signed with defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and now they're using it after McCoy injured a quad during training camp, Adam Schefter's reporting. The team has officially cut the 32-year-old McCoy, who spent 2019 in Carolina after nine seasons in Tampa.

Outkick's Dr. David Chao addressed what the quad injury means for McCoy, writing that it means he'll need surgery "with no chance to return no matter how long of a playoff run the Cowboys go on. No question."

Chao wrote:

Every year, more tendon tears, ligament tears and muscle injuries happen in the early parts of a season than once play begins. This year is likely to be no different, and could even be worse with the lack of offseason program.

This is why the NFLPA didn’t want preseason games but there is no way to avoid practice. Remember, the NFL did enact a graduated return to practice program where pads were just put on for the first time despite reporting on July 28th.

McCoy's deal with the Cowboys was a 3-year, $18 million deal that's now officially voided with McCoy keeping a $3 million signing bonus. He went into surgery earlier today to fix the quad injury. "This is a blessing in disguise and Im gonna approach is as such," he wrote on Instagram.
