Could The Jets Draft A QB At No. 2 And Still Keep Sam Darnold?

Videos by OutKick

At just 23 years old, there’s no question that good football could be ahead for New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold.

Darnold is one of the players most talked about in the league this offseason, as there’s been tons of rumors about his future – will the Jets trade him? Will they simply release him?

There’s also the chance that the Jets might just KEEP Darnold, and maybe either try to build around him or draft a quarterback with the second pick and have two high pick QBs on the roster.

On Monday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler tweeted about Darnold and said not to rule out the Jets keeping the QB and also bringing in another quarterback via the draft.

One thing that’s gone underplayed with Sam Darnold: I’m told keeping Darnold AND drafting a QB at 2 is not totally off the table. Jets have truly gone into this offseason with every option in consideration, and there’s still legit sentiment for Darnold’s skill set in the building

The Jets are very likely still making calls and speaking to teams about the potential for a trade for the 3rd overall pick of 2018.

The question is will the Jets get what they want, or will they simply keep Darnold and still draft a QB with the 2nd pick?

  1. Hey Matt,
It could happen. Steve Young went to the 49ers in 1987 and didn’t play ’til 1991 (when Montana got hurt). Aaron Rodgers sitting behind Bret Favre for 3 years. Those two come to mind easily, but I’m sure there were some other notables as well.
