Count the Chicago Bears as a team that is still in the mix to try and get a franchise quarterback this offseason, but if things don’t work out, they have someone potentially in the mix who is already under contract.
That quarterback is former Eagles Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles, who is due to make a very affordable salary cap number of $6.7 million in 2021, making him a candidate to be the starter for the Bears to begin the season.
Chicago could have Mitch Trubisky back if the two sides can come to a deal, but the Bears already declined their 5th year option on him, meaning if they want him back they would have to ink him to a whole new deal.
The Bears are a team that has been frequently mentioned to be in play for the likes of Texans QB Deshaun Watson, IF Houston ever looks to trade the 25-year-old, which has yet to happen.
Things got interesting this last week when Seattle franchise quarterback Russell Wilson reportedly expressed how unhappy he was with the team, and that he’d like to be traded, again something that has not been proven as fact, but again where there’s smoke there’s fire, and Wilson would be a massive get for any team, the Bears included.
Back to Foles, many think that the Bears want to keep him on the roster simply due to his affordability and the fact his cap number is not going to hurt the team.
Last season Foles had his struggles, going 2-5 as a starter, throwing for 10 touchdowns and 8 picks with a QB rating of just 80.8.
Trubisky as the starter for the Bears went 6-3, throwing 16 scores and eight picks, and helping the team secure a wild card spot before losing to the Saints in the wild card round.
With that though, don’t expect Trubisky to return in 2021, meaning as of now the job for the Bears could be Foles’ to lose.
