Could Mac Jones Upset Cam Newton For The Patriots QB Spot?

Who will play quarterback for the Patriots to start the season is still very much up in the air, and rookie Mac Jones is surprising everyone with his play in camps.

The Alabama National Championship quarterback "has done enough in the spring to merit a real competition with Cam Newton in the summer," according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.

The report goes on to say that Pats head coach Bill Belichick used his offseason practices to figure out who would be the Week One starter.

Whether that will be Jones is anyone's guess, but with the stock of the rookie trending upwards, it wouldn't be too much of a shock to see him replace Cam Newton, who struggled quite a bit last season.

"The real test, to me, was always going to be in training camp, and more specifically when the pads go on," Breer said.

"If Jones is out there with the first offensive-line group then, even if it’s just a percentage of those snaps, then I’d say we know something is afoot."

We shall see which direction Belichick goes. It's possible that Newton starts the year, but that Jones takes over in Week 6 or 7.
