The Alabama Crimson Tide again quieted their critics in their season opener on Saturday, blowing out the USC Trojans 52-6 to win their 13th straight game dating back to last season. The Crimson Tide closed as 13-point favorites against USC and covered the spread easily, improving to 6-2 versus the number in their last eight games.
This week, Alabama hosts the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers as 28.5-point betting favorites at sportsbooks in its home opener. While the defending national champions have been nearly unstoppable lately, they are just 2-5 against the spread in their last seven home games. The Hilltoppers are riding a seven-game winning streak as well, covering five in a row following a 46-14 rout of the Rice Owls.
Another top team that has been dominant recently but has also struggled at home at times is the Ohio State Buckeyes, who are coming off a 77-10 blowout of the Bowling Green Falcons in their season opener. The Buckeyes had no problem covering as 27.5-point favorites over the Falcons in winning for the 26th time in 27 games straight up, but they had failed to beat the spread in eight of their previous nine home games. Ohio State is now listed as a 29-point favorite against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, who have covered seven consecutive road games.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will try to rebound from a tough season-opening loss to the Texas Longhorns on Sunday, falling 50-47 in double overtime. The Fighting Irish closed as 3.5-point favorites and were ranked in the Top 10 before suffering that setback. They are 27-point chalk versus the Nevada Wolf Pack this week and have won six straight at home with a 5-1 mark ATS.
