Bomani Jones Ends First Season Losing Almost All of HBO’s Viewers

Videos by OutKick

The 11 pm hour on HBO Sunday was a mixed bag of results. From 11 to 11:30 ET, HBO drew 662,000 viewers. That’s good. Then, from 11:30 to midnight, HBO drew only 139,000. That’s terrible.

How does that happen? How does a network lose 523,000 viewers in half an hour?

Yep, you guessed it. Only one man could tank the ratings like that: Bomani Jones.

Game Race Theory with Bomani Jones ended its first season on Sunday by losing almost all of the viewers his lead-in, John Oliver, handed him. Eighty percent of them, to be exact.

And if it weren’t for Oliver, Jones would draw a CNN+ number. The one week Oliver was off, Jones failed to crack even 45,000 viewers.

Race Theory is the lowest-rated show in modern HBO history. Its first season rewrites the meaning of the word pathetic. Using online records, we could find only two talk shows that have ever failed as badly as this show has:

High Noon with Bomani Jones on ESPN and The Right Time with Bomani Jones on ESPN Radio, both of which ESPN canceled.

That’s it. Besides those two shows, nothing has ever failed like Race Theory has. So just put the ball in Bomani Jones’ hands and watch him miss the shot.

Of course, we are still expecting HBO to renew Jones for a second season out of fear. We explained why last week:

In most cases, HBO would not consider renewing the show — it would have canceled it by the second week. However, I suspect HBO will choose to renew the program. See, even though Jones costs HBO millions of dollars with no return, HBO fears the backlash it’d receive for axing him.

Jones has made a career out of race-baiting, and he has allies in media who pressure his bosses into promoting him. Look at the fawning puff pieces others have written about him recently. It’s as though Jones controls the media beat and has people from The Ringer on his payroll. Maybe he does.

Should HBO cancel his show for horrific ratings, Jones and his media lackeys would call HBO racist. That’s how they work. If HBO does renew the show, we will know why.

That’s what privilege looks like.

Some TV hosts use their highlight reels to earn promotions. Others use their looks. Some use backstage politics. Jones, meanwhile, uses the threat of calling his bosses racist.

No one has ever been rewarded for failing more than Bomani Jones has. His one true gift, besides losing ratings, is pressuring networks into giving him a new show after his previous show tanks.

Congratulations on your first season, Bomani.

  1. So i didnt sign up just to come question ur “facts” on the HBO #s, although those 2 shows u used as an example, just so coincidentally happen to include Bo as a host, which 1 might use as their reasoning to say u feel some type of way about him. Im not saying thats me, however im gonna hope ment his “The right time” show/podcast was canceled from TV or sumthing, because that would mean ur “fact” is actually FALSE AF. Im also hoping ur some sort of BOT that was created to try n throw dirt and invent false fiction about Bomani. If ur not, then it is u who is (also?) privileged, as u are allowed to use whatever teenie tiny platform u have. “Privilege” isnt always that deep. But u seem to think u are allowed to bash him and, again created in ur false fiction, let it be assumed that his shows name is actually “RACE THEORY”, which actually now i can say most, if not pretty much all, of ur “facts” r just fake because thats not his show.
This really can come off as sounding like ur a racist person urself, or racist BOT, doesnt matter. Again thats not what im saying, but if someone who has worked hard to get to where they are isnt allowed to fall back on their connections when needed, we wudnt have SUPERSTARS, or POLITICS for that matter.
So i say all that to finally ask u: WHO R U TO ACCUSE BOMANI, OR ANYBODY AT ALL, FOR PRESSURING COMPANY BY CALLING THEM RACIST. Clearly u dont understand how to work hard or u would have more views than him instead of a measly, teenie tiny, itty bitty, meer number of 2 people, and most likely are also bots, who read this piece of trash. Well 3 if u include me. Ur company shud HAND u a raise for my lowly 99cents seeing as ur not privileged enough to pull the “RACE CARD”.
