Bob Stoops Not Happy About ‘Horns Down’ Rule

Videos by OutKick

The new “Horns Down” rule is a complete joke. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. Hell, even Bob Stoops knows it.

The former Oklahoma head coach made an elaborate statement on the new rule that penalizes athletes for using the hand gesture towards a Texas player. A statement wasn’t necessary. All he needed to do was simply tweet out an emoji and a hashtag.

Now it’s pretty clear where Stoops stands on the issue at hand. Here was his response to a tweet sent out by former Sooners center Creed Humphrey on Thursday:

For anyone unfamiliar with the new rule, the Big 12 coordinator of officials, Greg Burks, said last week during a media days that the conference is planning to penalize any player who throws a “Horns Down” gesture in the direction of a Texas player.

“Lemme put it this way,” Burks said, via The Spun. “If you do a Horns Down to a Texas player as an opponent, that’s probably going to be a foul.”

Ridiculous.

The University of Texas separated itself with a hand gesture that is easy to recognize — and mock, for that matter. What happens if a Texas player throws a “Hook ‘Em” sign at an opposing player? Absolutely nothing, apparently.

But a player better not dare throw that “Horns Down” sign up. Otherwise, it will probably be a foul. Maybe.

  1. What about a horns up wiping tears off, or a horns up rocking and falling over sideways like it died, or a three horns up with one in the middle, or a horns up underarm fart, or a horns up yours? We can keep the horns facing the approved direction. Now every B12 team will.

  2. I see nothing wrong with horns down, but Texas gets to keep doing horns up! What is the difference? None. Texas is receiving sympathetic and biased treatment. Not a fan of either team, but this is beyond ridiculous.

  3. I get it, in college you are supposed to make personal gestures toward opposing players. It’s called taunting and its always been a rule people. They are just clarifying that horns down in the face of opposing player is taunting, like flipping the bird, tossing a ball in someone’s face. Do it toward your fans, that’s different. Alabama does the double hand “A”, but not in the face of another player. Sorry you folks don’t know the rules…and I don’t really care what Stoops thinks.

      • Yes well WVU was penalized twice in 2018 for the Horns Down gesture not toward any particular player and still won. Texas thinks their shit doesn’t stink and they need special treatment. All those 4/5 star players and struggle to get to 7 wins every year. Lame. Texas is baaaaaaack to the Alamo Bowl.
