Bill Belichick Has a Very Bill Belichick Answer About QB Platoon

You don’t notice it quite as much since there’s no preseason games, but we’re in the thick of the part of the NFL year where coaches are quoted and you scratch your head and wonder if they really mean what they’re saying.

An example of this happened on Wednesday when Bill Belichick was asked whether he’d consider platooning quarterbacks with the Patriots, where Cam Newton, Jarrett Stidham, and Brian Hoyer have been splitting reps in camp.

“It might (benefit the team),” Belichick answered, as transcribed by NFL.com. “Look, I always say, I’ll do what I think is best for the team, what gives us the best chance to win. So, whatever that is, I would certainly consider that. If it’s run unbalanced line, or double unbalanced line, or 23 personnel. Whatever it is. If it helps us win, then I would consider anything.”

For what it’s worth: Earlier this month, former Patriots star Willie McGinest and longtime former assistant Dante Scarnecchia seemed pretty sure that Cam Newton would open the season as starter.

If you’re spending the day in search of high energy and charisma, here’s Belichick’s full presser from yesterday:
