Georgia Could Be Closer Than Ever To Legalizing Sports Betting

It appears the sports betting in Georgia is close to becoming a thing. Basically, lawmakers there are ready to decide whether online sports betting is worth the risk.

According to The Current, the possibility of one of the half dozen gambling-related bills introduced at the state assembly could become law following a year that consisted of "financial belt-tightening" because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Either way, the idea of online sports betting remains very much alive with less than a week left in the session. On the bright side for wannabe bettors, a bill in favor already passed the Senate, 32-17.

"However, it remains to be seen if sports betting will be a priority for the House, where similar bills have stalled this session," The Current cautioned.

Or course, so much of it will come down to politics.

"Opposition to legalized gambling has been a bipartisan issue," The Current wrote. "Religious conservatives contend it’s immoral while progressives, who want a larger proportion of state funds dedicated to social welfare programs, argue the current reliance on the state lottery to rake in revenue exacerbates poverty and racial inequality."
