Bama, Clemson, Ohio State and Who in the College Football Playoff?

This college football season is already extremely interesting. Now with the return of the Big Ten, it’s starting to become clear which teams we’re most likely to see in the college football playoff.

Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State appear to be locks right now, but who is the fourth team?

“So, if you look at the college football playoff picture, one of the intriguing questions that is out there is, ‘Who is actually in the mix to be the fourth playoff team?’ And I’ve got several different teams for you because, thanks to the Big 12 basically giving up any chance at the playoffs unless Oklahoma State won out for the rest of the way, I think you’ve got several teams that are truly in the mix. Notre Dame, who plays against Clemson this weekend. Florida and Georgia, who play this weekend in the cocktail party.

“Having said that, I think Florida is going to beat Georgia. I really do. And that would mean that Florida would go play Alabama probably, and Florida would still need to get to nine and one to still be in the playoff mix. But both Florida and Georgia are alive. Notre Dame is alive. Maybe, maybe a PAC 12 champ who’s undefeated could be alive? I’m not 100% certain about that. I don’t think that they will finish the year with only one loss, but Oklahoma State lost at Texas this weekend. I think Oklahoma State would still kind of be in the mix. That’s it. Right?”

  1. TAM is definitely still in it. They likely have a better chance than Florida or Georgia (and I’m a Gator). If TAM wins out, which is very doable w/ a pretty easy schedule left, and they are 9-1 with only loss to SEC champion/best team in the country Alabama, seems like they would have a real good shot. I see this scenario even more likely than Florida or Georgia running the table. If FL/GA run it, they are in. I think the Gators will beat Georgia as well, but not sure we are up to the task against Bama.

If the above happens or TAM, I think the only scenario that keeps TAM out (other than absolute chaos in the second half of the season) is a split between Clemson and Notre Dame. If the Committee has to decide between a 9-1 TAM w/ only loss to Alabama, and a likely 10-1 ND/Clemson with a win and loss against Clemson/ND, the Committee would likely go with the ACC Champion. Otherwise, it’s Bama and OSU. Big 12 is out; Pac 12 is out; Non-Power 5 is out barring complete chaos.

  2. How it will play out:
    1) ND wins this week vs Clemson, Clemson wins rematch in ACC title game
    2) Alabama wins out
    3) Ohio St wins out

    Final Poll:
    1. Bama
    2. OSU
    3. Clemson
    4. ND

    Sugar: Bama vs ND
    Rose: OSU vs Clemson

    Title game:
    ??? vs ???

    • I like that scenario, my “domer” neighbor has predicted ND and Clemson play 3 times this year, that could really happen in your scenario.

But I think history repeats, Clemson and Bama yet again. And we’ll get to hear all the ESPN clones saying “if you don’t like Clemson vs. Bama you just don’t like excellence” yada yada yaba daba doo.
