Are You Ready For Gender-Neutral Playing Cards?

When was the last time you were playing a game of euchre with the neighbors, and one of the ladies spoke up and said it was time for the euchre club to stop being so sexist and get a deck of gender-neutral cards for the next game at Kylie and Chad’s house? Never? Thought so.

Have you ever been to Vegas and come across some chainsmoking Chinese lady banging away at the $25 blackjack table complaining that the cards weren’t gender-neutral? Didn’t think so. That Chinese lady just wants to see the male or female dealer slap that felt with face cards for hours on end.

But, these modern times call for being offended by damn near everything, and playing cards have now entered the chatroom. Dutch forensic psychology student Indy Mellink, 23, figured it was time to come up with a modern deck of cards for those who are constantly offended, and she came up with a deck that removed the king, queen and jack.

Now it’s gold, silver and bronze.

“If we have this hierarchy that the king is worth more than the queen, then this subtle inequality influences people in their daily life because it’s just another way of saying ‘hey, you’re less important,'” she said of her creation that has sold approximately 1,500 packs.

“I wonder if it’s worth it. But gender neutrality, I am all for it! It’s great that someone of this age has noticed this. It’s the new generation,” Indy added.

Playing cards are believed to date back to around the 9th century AD and have gone through all sorts of changes from being printed on woodblocks to modern thin plastics. There have been terrorists on playing cards. Police departments have put mugshots on playing cards.

It’s shocking to think it took so long for the gender-neutral crowd to throw their weight around, but here we are with a new form of cards.

Because we love free markets, Indy should be congratulated for creating something that might make her a few bucks. Just don’t plan on Kylie and Chad introducing a deck for the next euchre night. It’s hard enough for Bailey and Damon to keep track of trump.

  1. ‘Dutch psychology graduate creates gender neutral pack of cards to target ‘subtle inequality”

More proof psychology creates more problems than it solves.

“If we have this hierarchy that the king is worth more than the queen, then this subtle inequality influences people in their daily life because it’s just another way of saying ‘hey, you’re less important,’”

Me thinks she’s just speaking for herself.

  2. So, since Biden did say part of his priorities is tackling “gender neutrality”, and if this new deck of cards is where we are headed, than is it safe to say that LeBron James should no longer refer to himself as “King” James? Just asking for 74M voters, er, friends? LOL
