One Officer Indicted in Breonna Taylor Case; Not for Role in Her Death

Today, a Kentucky grand jury announced indictments in the case of the death of Breonna Taylor in Louisiville this past March.

Officer Brett Hankison was indicted on three counts of wanton endangerment; officers Jonathan Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove did not receive indictments. As Travis Ragsdale of WDRB notes, Hankison's wanton endangerment charges do not pertain directly to the death of Breonna Taylor, but are for firing into neighboring apartments.

Per the New York Times, after the announcement, Kentucky’s attorney general, Daniel Cameron, said, “The decision before my office is not to decide if the loss of Breonna Taylor’s life was a tragedy — the answer to that question is unequivocally yes.”

Cameron added, “The pain people are feeling is understandable. I deeply care about the value and sanctity of human life, which deserves protection, and in this case a human life was lost,” he said, and went on to say: “My job was to put emotions aside and determine if criminal violations of state law resulted in the loss of her life.”
