Amanda Nunes Pops Positive Test, Cancels Her UFC Title Fight

Women's bantamweight champ Amanda Nunes (21-4 MMA, 14-1 UFC) will have to withdraw from her upcoming fight after testing positive for COVID. Nunes was scheduled to face off against Julianna Pena (10-4 MMA, 6-2 UFC) at next week's UFC 265 (Aug. 7), which will now be delayed until December.

Announced via Instagram, the fighter detailed that her daughter and partner had also tested positive for COVID, with no indication of any serious symptoms from either member.

According to MMA Junkie, a matchup between Jose Aldo and Pedro Munhoz will fill in for the postponed fight, leading up to the main event between Derrick Lewis and Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight title.

Nunes' rein in the UFC women's division — since 2014 — has produced an incredible streak never seen in the Octagon, accumulating both women's bantamweight and featherweight titles along 12 consecutive fights won.

Having faced off against featherweight contender Megan Anderson at UFC 259 in March, the all-time great Nunes nabbed her ninth title win — the most in women's UFC history. Even with the hiccup of testing positive for COVID, the ruthless "Lioness" will be ready to put up her dukes against the contending Pena once the fight is officially arranged for the projected month of December.
