Jerod Mayo Feels Good About Crowded Patriots QB Room

The best way to fix your quarterback problem is to acquire as many quarterbacks as possible. At least, that's Jerod Mayo's strategy for the New England Patriots.

The Pats drafted two quarterbacks over the weekend — Drake Maye at No. 3 and Joe Milton III at No. 193. That's on top of the three signal callers already on the roster. In a press conference on Saturday, reporters asked Mayo if he envisioned keeping all five QBs through the off-season program.

"Well, that’s yet to be seen," Mayo said, via the transcript on the team's website. "At this current time, we’re still on the phone right now with potential free agents coming up here soon. We’ll see how all the dominoes kind of play out, but at the same time, you want to have a strong group. You want to have a strong room. I would say the way it looks now, we have a very strong room."

Maye and Milton join veteran Jacoby Brissett, last year's QB2 Bailey Zappe and 2023 undrafted free agent Nathan Rourke in the quarterbacks' room. The Pats dealt QB Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars last month after a couple of disappointing seasons as the starter in New England.

"We’re in the business of trying to get good football players through the door, and Milton happens to be one of them," Mayo said. "Obviously, he understands we took a quarterback at three in Drake. One thing that we preach is competition. Everything is about competition, and nothing is given. All of it’s earned. That’s how we thought about the process."

The plan, obviously, is to get Maye ready to take over as the starter — with Brissett likely filling the other QB spot on the 53-man roster. As for that emergency third quarterback spot, though… may the best man win.
